Philmont Scout Ranch is a premier high adventure base in northern New Mexico, owned and operated by Scouting America. With 214 square miles of rugged New Mexico mountains, approximately 18,000 Scouts hike over 400 miles of trails each summer. In 2002, Philmont developed a demonstration forest located in the backcountry, which now sees about 5,000 through hikers each season. The Visiting Forester program was established to greet these hikers, who come from across the country, and teach them about all aspects of forestry, especially as it relates to the Southwest. Volunteers get to spend a week in the beautiful backcountry. Sound fantastic? Indeed. Come by and see us in the exhibit hall, pick out a week that works for you, and fill out an application (spouses are welcome). The camping season runs for about 10 weeks from early June to the middle of August.
