Developing operational guidance for small ruminant grazing is key to utilizing this management tool in forested ecosystems. Early results from Sierra Nevada grazing trials explore current research gaps to evaluate grazing effectiveness on vegetation reduction, impact to conifer species, operational logistics of herd management, and livestock forage in forested landscapes.
Learning Objectives:
Upon completion, participants will be able to evaluate the potential of silvopastoral management as an intermediate forest treatment to meet landscape goals (e.g., reducing competition with conifers or moderating fire behavior)
Upon completion, participants will be able to understand key operational variables (e.g. seasonal timing, forage species, operational design, cost, management goals, and herd class) driving the effectiveness of small ruminant grazing in forested ecosystems.
