Urban forested natural areas provide ecosystem services to dense population centers. However, management is complicated by their small size and proximity to urban areas. Urban silviculture, combining arboriculture and traditional silviculture, offers unique opportunities to advance management of urban forests while recruiting a new and diverse audience into forestry.
Learning Objectives:
Upon completion, participants will be able to visualize urban forested natural areas, articulate why they are important, and differentiate them from other components of the urban forest.
Upon completion, participants will be able to describe urban silviculture, explain how it differs from arboriculture and traditional silviculture, and list examples of the challenges and opportunities it creates for urban forest managers.
Upon completion, participants will be able to direct others to sources of information on urban forested natural areas and urban silviculture.
