This study evaluates the impacts of establishing a forest farm to grow three perennial forest botanicals. The goals include i) evaluate the productivity of the planted botanicals; ii) determine the impact of thinning and burning on soil chemical properties and microbial communities; and iii) quantify changes in the herbaceous understory.
Learning Objectives:
Define the practice of forest farming and describe how forest management practices can support the establishment of a forest farm.
Assess the potential outcomes of thinning and burning to benefit forest health and the production of nontimber forest products.
Identify future research needs in forestry to develop forest farming best management practices.
