Keith O’Herrin, Ph.D. is the Urban Forester for Union County, North Carolina, right outside Charlotte, where he helps about 10 small towns in his county preserve trees during intense development pressure. He also works with his local school district to introduce youth to trees and nature as a career. He recently created a tree nursery at a middle school, and one of his other middle schools just achieved the Tree Campus K-12 Award. He has worked as an urban forester for 16 years across 5 states, in large cities and small towns. He has conducted research on the profession of urban forestry including the recruitment pipeline, municipal urban forestry operations, and tree preservation during development.
