Denise Ann Barrett joined Forest Bridges as its first paid executive director in April 2022 and is a champion of Forest Bridges’ Active Conservation Management proposals for the 2.9 million acres of O&C public lands of western Oregon.
A visionary, strategic, collaborative, and mission-driven executive, Denise brings more than 25 years of experience developing, leading, and managing more than a dozen complex organizations and programs in the public, private, and non-profit spheres in Africa, the Middle East, South Asia, and several regions of the U.S.
Her leadership missions have included strengthening the sutainability of food and forest systems, enhancing resilience in local and regional contexts, and improving conditions for populations under emergency duress and displacement, oppressed by unjust systems and structures, struggling with high-risk environments, and recovering from civil war and natural disasters.
In her two years as the Forest Bridges Executive Director, Denise has helped the organization complete core pieces of its forest policy work, strengthened its organizational foundation and public education and communications efforts, and contributed Forest Bridges’ Active Conservation Management strategies as proposed alternatives in Bureau of Land Management and US Forest Service planning processes, including for the Cascade-Siskiyou National Monument on the Oregon-California border and the Northwest Forest Plan Amendment.
Denise holds a Master’s in International Administration from the School for International Training in Vermont, with an emphasis on development management, and a Bachelor’s in Liberal Arts and Journalism from the University of St. Thomas, St. Paul, Minnesota. She is also trained in quantum healing and water science and is a practicing screenwriter. She lives in Roseburg, Oregon.
