ORISE Postdoctoral Fellow
USDA / Forest Service / Forest Products Laboratory
Dr. Javier A. Hernandez-Diaz is an ORISE Postdoctoral Fellow at the USDA Forest Products Laboratory in Madison, Wisconsin. He earned his Ph.D. in Forestry from Auburn University, where his research centered on the degradation and valorization of Loblolly Pine downed timber, particularly focusing on the recovery of natural polymers to advance bioeconomy strategies. Dr. Hernandez-Diaz also holds Graduate Certificates in Pulp and Paper Engineering and Supply Chain Management Innovation from Auburn University. He completed his M.S. in Water and Energy Engineering and his B.S. in Land Surveying Engineering at Universidad de Guadalajara, Mexico.
Dr. Hernandez-Diaz’s research spans a wide range of sustainable bio-based materials, including nanocellulose membranes, lignin-based sunscreen formulations, pectin-nanocellulose emulsions for enhanced adhesive tack, wood acoustics, and near-infrared spectroscopy for timber degradation assessment. His work also delves into the chemical characterization of wood, contributing significantly to advancements in forest products and sustainable materials.
Beyond his research, Dr. Hernandez-Diaz is dedicated to academic service, actively participating as a reviewer for the Forest Products Journal and engaging with various professional organizations. He has received multiple awards for his research presentations, highlighting his significant contributions to forestry and environmental science. His multidisciplinary expertise and commitment to the development of sustainable materials underscore his valuable role in the field.
