Casey is a registered professional forester in British Columbia, Canada and is based in Kamloops on the unceded lands of the Secwepemc people. As the registrar of the professional regulating body for forest professionals in that province, Casey is responsible for the programs that admit new foresters to the profession, as well as professional discipline proceedings and addressing unlawful practice. Forestry is a regulated profession across Canada and requires registration in many provinces in order to practice. His 30 year background in forestry spans road and cutblock planning, mapping and GIS services, timber supply forecasting, managing Indigenous partnerships, maintaining relationships with rights holders and interest groups on the landbase, and for the past decade - professional regulation.
On a more philosophical level, Casey is interested in the human dynamics in forest management. Forest ecosystems are complex and so are people. Increasingly, there is a growing tension between people and organizations regarding how objectives are set for forest and land management. This is particularly the case in BC, where 95% of the land is publicly owned and where Indigenous people (Nations) have established rights on that land. Foresters are traditionally trained to manage the technical elements of forest management but often lack the tools to navigate the human conflicts.
Casey has a diploma in forest technology, a degree in forest management and a masters in conflict analysis. He also has an art practice making products from trees lost to wildfires. His work connects him to the professional community while his art connects him to lay people and those with an interest in the impacts of wildfire on the future health of the forests.
