David R. Godwin is the director and co-principal investigator of the Southern Fire Exchange program at the University of Florida's School of Forest, Fisheries, and Geomatics Sciences. He holds a B.S. in Geography from Florida State University and an M.S. and Ph.D. in Fire Science and Forest Resources from the University of Florida. His research spans various southern ecosystems, focusing on wildfire burn severity using remote sensing and the impacts of prescribed fire and mechanical fuel treatments on southeastern U.S. forests and soil carbon dynamics. Since 2013, he has led technology transfer programs for the Southern Fire Exchange (SFE). Funded by the Joint Fire Science Program, SFE is a collaboration between the University of Florida, North Carolina State University, and Tall Timbers Research Station. David leads the SFE team in developing resources, programs, and opportunities to enhance the application of wildland fire science in land management decisions across the southeastern U.S. David is a certified fire ecologist and an active member of both the Association for Fire Ecology and the Association for Natural Resources Extension Professionals. He founded the University of Florida's Student Association for Fire Ecology (SAFE) chapter. Additionally, he serves on the steering committee of the North Florida Prescribed Fire Council and is part of the leadership team for the National Extension Wildland Fire Initiative.
