Research Biologist US Army Corps of Engineers, United States
Wet pine flatwoods of the southeastern US naturally require fire as a disturbance to maintain habitat quality. Some management areas are close to urban development, making the use of prescribed burns risky. In this research, understory management by mowing is assessed for effectiveness as a substitute for prescribed fire.
Learning Objectives:
...provide management recommendations for forest habitats that require prescribed fire, but are in proximity to urban development making prescribed fire too risky.
...recognize the utility of the Hydrogeomorphic approach for assessing forested wetland functions.
