Forester Manager
Usal Redwood Forest Company, United States
Bio
After attending forestry school at the University of Georgia in the early 1980’s, Linwood pursued a lifelong dream of thru hiking the 2000-mile Appalachian Trail from Georgia to Maine in 1985. After completion of his hike, he traveled to the West Coast and began working with Craig Blencowe, a private consultant for non-industrial private landowners. It is that experience that shaped his forest management philosophy and the importance of building long term relationships with loggers, mill operators and the forest itself. He obtained his California Registered Professional Foresters License in the 1995 and continued to work with Blencowe Associates until 2009, when he formed his own consulting business, Gill Family Forest Management.
In 2017, Linwood assumed the position of Forest Manager for the Usal Redwood Forest Company, a 50,000 acre property owned by the Redwood Forest Foundation, Inc. As the Forest Manager, he oversees all aspects of operations on URFC including timber harvest, reforestation, stand improvement projects, restoration activities, budgeting and financial oversight.
He is a founding member of the Forest Stewards Guild and has served on its Board of Directors, and the Membership and Policy Council. He currently serves on the board of the Mendocino County Co-op Aerial Fire Patrol.
His favorite quote is from Henry Cary, founder of the Forest Stewards Guild: “A forester is remembered not for what he takes, but what he leaves behind.”
