Dave Cawrse is a consulting forester with degrees from The Ohio State University (BS Forest Resource Management), Colorado State University (MS – Forest Economics), and University of Montana (MF – Silviculture). He retired from the US Forest Service in 2019 after a 40-year career with that agency. In 1980, he started his career in planning with the Lewis and Clark National Forest in Great Falls, Montana. His career took him around the country, including positions on the Flathead National Forest in Kalispell, Montana (planner, reforestation/TSI forester, certified silviculturist, and timber management assistant); National Forests of North Carolina in Highlands, North Carolina (District Ranger); Nebraska National Forest in Chadron, Nebraska (Team Leader for the Northern Great Plains Land Management Plan Revision for the northern National Grasslands); and Shoshone National Forest in Cody, Wyoming (Resource Staff Officer and also Team Leader for the Forest Plan Amendments for Grizzly Bear Habitat Conservation in the Greater Yellowstone Area). From 2006 to 2019, he served as the National Biometrics Group Leader for the Washington Office Forest Management Staff in the Detached Unit in Ft. Collins, Colorado.
Dave has several publications in planning, economics, and silviculture. In 2019 he received the USDA Undersecretary’s Award and the US Forest Service Chief’s Award for work in Forest Products Modernization. In 2014, Dave served as Chair, Colorado/Wyoming State Chapter of SAF and was recognized as a Fellow by SAF in 2018.
