Dr. Moltzan is the current National Pathologist for the USDA FOREST SERVICE. He has over 32+ years of forest health experience in forest pathology developing response strategies to emerging pest and implementing policy to protect our nation’s forest resources. Since 2008, he has been very active with invasive tree pathogens such as Sudden Oak Death, White Pine Blister Rust, Chestnut Blight, Rapid Ohia Death, and many others. Dr. Moltzan served as one of three instructors to the facilitate a capacity building workshop hosted by APFISN in China. He has been an invited plenary speaker at numerous meetings, and has been very active in IUFRO since 2001 serving as Deputy for the 7.02.05 working group on rust. He has organized/hosted several meetings on forest genetics and resistance, including being lead organizer of the International Workshop on Disease and Insect Resistance in Forest Trees that was held in 2011 in Eugene, OR, and helped organized the subsequent workshop in France in 2015. Dr. Moltzan continues to work closely with organizations such as FAO, IUFRO, NPS, BLM, ODF, WA DNR, South Slough NERR and Tribes, as well as university scientists and non-industrial and industrial landowners. Prior to joining the Forest Service, Dr. Moltzan worked for the Missouri Department of Conservation as its State Forest Pathologist, directing MDC’s Diagnostic Laboratory assisting the State Forester and 85 foresters with disease issues, training, and outreach/education needs. Dr. Moltzan holds advanced degrees from the University of Alberta and North Dakota State University. Enjoys working on landscape level problems to integrate forest health and is a happy grandfather of 5 who loves to get them out in the great outdoors, especially in search of fungi, a passion which has earned him the nick-name ‘Fun-Guy’ wherever culinary arts abound!
