Innovating around implementation: New approaches to​ silviculture and restoration in the Southwest

Emerging digital technologies offer new ways of thinking about, implementing, and assessing silvicultural treatments. In the Southwest, researchers and practitioners are exploring alternatives to traditional, paint-based methods for designating individual trees prior to harvest in an effort to enhance the pace and scale of forest restoration.

Learning Objectives:

  • Describe the ecological, social, institutional, and operational context for large scale restoration work in southwestern Ponderosa pine forests.
  • List different methods for designating trees to cut and understand the differences in preparation cost, harvesting productivity, and silvicultural outcomes between them.
  • Explain the advantages and unresolved challenges of digitized prescription implementation approaches in different forest types and for different silvicultural applications.
