Mixedwoods (hardwood–softwood mixtures) present management opportunities and challenges. There is evidence that some mixedwoods confer ecological and economic benefits, but desired species mixtures can be difficult to maintain. This work identifies potential benefits, common pitfalls, and management considerations broadly applicable to temperate mixedwoods in the eastern U.S. and Canada.
Learning Objectives:
Provide examples of temperate mixedwood (hardwood - softwood) forest types.
Identify limiting species that are barriers to successful management for mixedwood composition.
Suggest silvicultural treatments for mixedwood management at various stages of stand development.
